Canada fulfilled the target of giving 401,000 foreigners remained safe in 2021 by focusing its efforts in the temporary population in the country, the Minister of Immigration Sean Fraser said on Thursday.
Canada, which depends on immigration to encourage its economy and support the aging population, see residents remain newly down more than 45% to 185,000 in 2020, when the limit is mostly closed due to Covid-19.
The majority of 401,000 residents remain new – the number achieved for the first time in more than a century – already in Canada in a temporary status, according to a statement from the Minister of Immigration.
“Last year, we set ambitious goals. Today, we achieve it,” Fraser said.
The government of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to improve the Canadian economy since the power in 2015, setting an annual target of around 1% of the country’s population nearly 38 million.
The government said he would hope to add 411,000 new permanent residents next year.
Official data released earlier on Thursday showed the Canadian economy the possibility of developing for the sixth consecutive month in November, coming very close to the pre-pandemic level.
