From leading the remnants of the United National Party (UNP) after an amazing election defeat where he failed to win a seat to become the president of his country, Ranil Wickremesinghe’s wealth had changed dramatically in this year of history making in Sri Lanka.
President Sri Lanka
Wickremesinghe was chosen by the Sri Lanka Parliament with 132 votes (at home 225) – and according to the constitution, he will serve the remaining predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa Terms that began in November 2019.
Wickremesinghe, who is a member of parliament nominated from UNP and does not have other party colleagues in parliament – UNP did not win any seats in the 2019 parliamentary elections, and Wickremesinghe himself lost the Kolombo seat – especially depending on the voice of the Rajapaksa Rajapaksa party – especially on the voice Rajapaksa Rajapaksa – Very dependent on the voice of Rajapakt, Sri Lanka Podujana Peamuna (SLPP).
Because it is a secret voting, it is unclear whether all SLPP members voted for them (the rival candidate Dallas Alahapperouma also from SLPP) – and whether he also got the votes of others, including parliamentary members from Sajith Premadasa Jana Balwegaya (SJB), which was formed by those who were formed Leaving UNP after being disappointed by Wickremesinghe’s leadership.
A bankrupt nation, an angry person
As president, Wickremesinghe has his duties. He took over when the country, with his own words, was “bankrupt”. Do not have foreign reserves to buy fuel, food commodities, or medicines. Nearly 7 million Sri Lanka people face hunger, according to the world food program.
Schools are closed as fuel efficient measures, and children can be re-established for several years due to malnutrition and school closure, which has occurred after similar educational disorders due to Pandemic Coronavirus.
As Prime Minister in the Gotabaya Rajapaksa president, he is already in negotiations with the IMF for the bailout. While the sequel in a higher office may be an international advantage, on Jalan Sri Lanka, the selection of Wickremesinghe has been received with disappointment – he is seen as a proxy Rajapaksa who will do everything to protect the family, and may even allow the return of Gotabaya Gotabaya Negara.
Old warhorse from politician shares
Wickremesinghe came from a multi -storey political family. His father was a newspaper baron, the owner of the Lake House newspaper group at this time, which was nationalized by the Prime Minister of Sirima Bandaranaike in the 1970s. His uncle is J R Jayewardene, who brought the executive presidential system through a new constitution in 1978. UNP is often referred to as the “niece of the uncle’s nephew”.
Ranil has fought for a direct presidential election twice, and has lost a second time. In 1998, he lost to Chandrika Kumaratunga, and in 2005 to Mahinda Rajapaksa. He did not fight for the 2010, 2015 or 2019 Presidential Elections.
The first two times, UNP supported the same opposition candidates, and in 2019, Ranil agreed to install the Premradasa Sajith from his party in an effort to extinguish the rebellion in it.
History of the Latest Ups and Downs
In 2015, after the victory of the general opposition candidate, the rebel of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Maithripala Sirisena, Ranil became Prime Minister – and the two leaders tried to run the cohabitation government which proved to be a total failure. He was fired by President Sirisena, but won the office back by making legal challenges for his dismissal.
His recovery did not increase the cold war between him and the President. Their inability to work together is one of the factors that causes failure to prevent Easter attacks 2019.
Gotabaya was elected president of the end of the year, and his brother Mahinda swept the parliamentary election in 2020 with SLPP.
In his mind, a fate man
In all, wickremesinghe has been prime minister five times, never completing a term even once, starting with a one year stint in 1993-94 during the d b wijetunga presidence to his last term which starts on May 12 and ended with his election on wednesday as President.
Wickremesinghe once believed he would come down in history as a leader who ended the civil war. UNP urban constituents are very unhappy with how war influences the economy. When he became prime minister at the end of 2001, Sri Lanka had experienced a negative growth of 1.4 percent. After determining correctly that LTTE is a war machine, Wickremesinghe is determined to solve it by delivering peace.
As a first step, he signed a ceasefire in Norwegian with the Supremo LTTE Velupillai Prabhangaran (both of which were not face to face for this), and were ready to place the tiger responsible for temporary administration in the north and east. The ceasefire does carry the inflow of foreign finances.
But the ambitious plan to be cut when Kuaratunga, was not happy with the ceasefire requirements and when appointed, carried out its strength as president and fired him in 2004, before his plan began to produce results. It will be the brother of Rakjapaksa who will end the civil war, through a military campaign to run out against LTTE.
One more chance – Moonshot
Now, Destiny has handed over Wickremesinghe one more chance to prove its credentials, and to go down in history as president who made Sri Lanka recovering in the economy.
He did inspire more trust in the western capital and in India than many other Sri Lanka politicians. But so that the international community helps Sri Lanka, he needs to restore political stability. And for that, he first needs to convince the Sri Lanka people that he is not the proxy of Rajapaksa brothers and sisters.
This is public knowledge that Wickremesinghe went slowly in an investigation of Rajapaksas when he became Prime Minister from 2015-19. If he continues to be seen as a friend of Rajapaksas, Aragalaya – “struggle” – from people – people cannot end.
