UK Electronic Passport Gate Failure Clogs Border Control at Heathrow

Electronic passport gates at Britain’s airports failed on Friday, causing chaos at London’s Heathrow, where long queues filled immigration halls and a few passengers were detained on aircraft until space inside was available.

Britain’s interior ministry said a technical issue had affected e-gates at variety of ports of entry.

The issue was quickly identified and has now been resolved,” it said during a statement.

One passenger at Heathrow said it had been chaos within the terminal, with space to queue rapidly running out.

The e-gates are staffed and operated by Britain’s Border Force, a department of the inside ministry.
Passengers at Heathrow had already endured lengthy queues this summer as staff struggled to process COVID-19 documentation additionally to passports and visas.

“A delay that calls into question the federal government’s ability to satisfy all its obligations would likely cause irreparable damage to the U.S. economy and global financial markets,” Yellen said during a letter alerting Congress to the approaching exhaustion of the Treasury’s cash and extraordinary measures. “At a time when American families, communities, and businesses are still affected by the consequences of the continued global pandemic, it might be particularly irresponsible to place the complete faith and credit of the us in danger .”
